Money cannot be eaten

"Only after the last tree has been cut down. Only after the last river has been poisoned. Only after the last fish has been caught. Only then will you find: money cannot be eaten.”

The truth of this ancient Cree Indian saying grows with time. Wealth is all around us. In our seas, and rivers, in our natural landscapes, our forests and savannahs. When we learn to protect and conserve this natural environment for future generations we will achieve real wealth and happiness.

Water works to alleviate poverty and suffering

Water charity celebrates role of clean water in development aid

The charity WaterAid has been one of the major charities celebrating the importance of Global Handwashing Day 2012 that promotes handwashing as a simple way to reduce disease and sickness.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says promoting handwashing with soap and water can cut diarrhoea cases by about 50 per cent, saving many lives as a result.
Tragically 2,000 kids under five die each day due to this preventable disease.

WaterAid is active bringing clean water development projects across Africa and other developing countries.

As well as promoting health and safety the charity’s water projects also provide a platform for wider health, education and economic development in poor communities, including rural communities.
The charity's Big Dig projects in Malawi, for instance this year, benefited entire communities’ abilities to be productive and generate wealth.

With access to clean water and sanitation, children’s health is promoted so they are well enough to attend school and get an education. Women do not have to walk long distances for water across potentially dangerous landscapes. There is more time and energy for parents to earn a living and support their families.
783 million people globally lack access to clean drinking water, it is estimated, while about 2.5 billion people do not have safe sanitation.

In a recent statement Henry Northover, WaterAid's Head of Policy, praising an appeal by British Prime Minister David Cameron for more countries to step up international aid to relieve poverty, said:

"Improvements in water and sanitation reduce illness and deaths and are vital to meeting many of the other development goals.

"Sanitation is one of the most off-track of the targets and diarrhoea remains one of the biggest killers of children in Africa."

The water charity works in 27 countries across Africa, as well as Asia, Central America and the Pacific.

Day of the Girl, Thursday October 11, 2012

International Day of the Girl – equality for all at work and home

Charities are calling for support to spread girls economic and social rights across the globe

Today Thursday October 11, 2012 is the first International Day of the Girl Child.
On the day of International Day of the Girl Child today UNICEF is focusing on ending child marriage as its main campaign issue.
UNICEF and partners are highlighting joint efforts to end child marriage – described as “a fundamental human rights violation.”
“The International Day of the Girl Child readily reflects the need to put girls rights at the centre of development...” said Anju Malhotra from UNICEF.
"The UN and partners are coming together to show the incredible progress made and to highlight the ongoing challenges."
Under the banner My Life, My Right, End Child Marriage, a series of events are taking place throughout the world to draw attention to this issue.
In partnership with other agencies UNICEF also says it is laying the groundwork to end child marriage globally with a number of programmes.
The charity points to India, traditionally a country with one of the largest number of girls being married before their 18th birthday, where child marriage is declining.
"Child marriage can often result in ending a girl’s education. In communities where the practice is prevalent, marrying a girl as a child is part of a cluster of social norms and attitudes that reflect the low value accorded to the human rights of girls," says Ms Malhotra.
A key part of International Day of the Girl is to promote education, one of the most effective strategies to protect children against marriage and promote economic and social opportunities for women.
Guy Ryder, of the UN’s International Labour Organisation (ILO), also welcomed the special focus on gender inequality today which the ILO says is reproduced in the world of work.
"Practices such as child labour and child marriage – the theme of this day – are a denial of the rights of children and an acute constraint to their full development.
"Such practices also weigh heavily on the overall capacity of societies to achieve their development objectives."
Many development organisations are behind International Day of the Girl. To find out more about the background to this historic event, read our article about charities involved in International Day of the Girl, especially Plan.
At our charity news site we have been covering the progress of International Day of the Girl since last year, with regular updates including this innovative digital 'bus stop' campaign and a report of how a Bangladeshi girls rights campaigner showed how the sky is the limit for girls.
Plan also launches its new global campaign today, to support equal rights for quality education for girls.

New Baby Gorilla: Durrell Wildlife Trust

Success as baby gorilla is born at UK wildlife conservation centre

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is celebrating after the birth of a baby gorilla. Too cute for words. But also an important part of the charity’s conservation efforts helping the world’s most endangered species to survive. Based in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust announced the new arrival of the healthy baby western lowland gorilla a few days ago to mother: Hlala Kahilli and father: Badongo. The baby remains stuck to its mum for the time being.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Unsurprisingly Mark Brayshaw, Head of Animal Collection at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, described the importance of the birth as “a great success for Durrell”.

It's especially an achievement for the charity’s breeding programme supporting these critically endangered primates. Congratulations to Durrell and also to parents Hlala and Badongo.

Badger supporters about to launch milk wars?

Action against badger cull steps up, including threats to boycott farmers milk

Animal welfare charities have launched a fresh campaign to challenge badger culls in the UK, with the RSPCA even calling for a boycott of milk produced by farmers in areas where the culls are going ahead.

The campaign seems to have some weight behind it already with the Co-op, one of Britain's biggest farmers already coming out in favour of the badger supporters with a statement saying: "There is no expectation that badger culls will take place on land managed by the Co-operative and nor would they be supported..."

The talk of boycotts comes as a new coalition of animal welfare charities, Team Badger was launched this week by Brian May of the band Queen, following an e-petition campaign.

Bovine TB is a serious issue resulting, for instance, in the loss of 25,000 cattle to UK farmers in 2010.

Should farmers be threatened with further economic losses in the form of a boycott?

Some animal welfare supporters think so, but more importantly they want the shooting of badgers to be abandoned due to animal welfare grounds and the lack of credibility of the proposals.

The Badger Trust feels the death of 40,000 badgers over the next four years if the culls are rolled out further is totally unacceptable, especially when the scientific grounds for the culls are being repeatedly called into question.

What do you think?

At Xperedon we have been following the arguments for and against the badger culls throughout 2012 including this article on our news page, featuring Rethink Bovine TB, a campaign group who go quite deep into the scientific evidence.

At the Xperedon website we also list many charities that are campaigning for animal welfare, including the various pro-badger charities, including the Badger Trust, the dedicated UK charity protecting badgers.

HUNGER APPEAL: Ralph Fiennes

Celebrities support UNICEF's urgent appeal for West Africa hunger crisis...

UNICEF UK Ambassador Ralph Fiennes is one of many UNICEF celebrity supporters calling for an urgent response to the food crisis in West Africa that UNICEF has described as a growing scandal.

The actor has recalled his visit to Chad where he saw a malnourished infant that was in a life threatening situation...

Writing in his blog, he says: "I am alarmed to hear from UNICEF that in the next few months, a million children could die in eight countries across West Africa, including Chad, without immediate treatment and care..."

Bemoaning the lack of media attention for the food crisis that currently threatens so many vulnerable children, and with all the necessary remedies still underfunded the actor is urging the global community to wake up to the impending crisis.

And for anyone who can help, to support UNICEF's global appeal to raise funds for the children whose lives are at risk...

The charity also launched its #SahelNOW social media campaign ... which is receiving endorsements from millions already including celebrities such as Eddie Izzard, Bjork, Mia Farrow and Danny Glover.

PRINCE CHARLES: Red squirrel awards

Prince Charles endorses Red Squirrel Volunteer of the Year Awards 2012

The charity Red Squirrel Survival Trust has announced the winners of its volunteer awards for 2012…

The awards will be presented by the Duke of Northumberland in June at Alnwick Castle, and have been endorsed by Prince Charles.

Launched last year, the awards are designed to honour hard working volunteers in the world of red squirrel conservation…

The awards celebrate the work of volunteers working around the UK to preserve native red squirrels, and this year includes conservationist and red squirrel expert, David Stapleford from Norfolk.

Mr Stapleford receives a Lifetime Achievement award from the national conservation charity.

Mr Stapleford runs a breeding and conservation programme for the red squirrel, an at risk species in the UK... He also co-founded the East Anglian Red Squirrel Breeding Programme and is an adviser to the Countryside Restoration Trust (CRT) amongst other societies...

Other volunteer awards are going to: Elizabeth Bamford, Berwick upon Tweed; Helen Butler, Isle of Wight; Jackie Foott, Cumbria; Sally Hardy, Northumberland; Jerry, Sarah and Hagen Moss, Cumbria; Julie Bailey, Cumbria; Gillian Hill, Lancashire and James Sim from Argyll.

Elizabeth Bamford from Berwick upon Tweed has been recognised in the role of Unsung Hero, working as she does as a lead volunteer for the Berwick upon Tweed Save Our Squirrels group, covering the lower Tweed Valley along the Northumberland and Scots border.

The work involves getting landowners, gamekeepers and volunteers working together to support the squirrels that are under serious threat of extinction. Red squirrels are largely under threat due to competition from the more dominant greys, who carry the squirrelpox virus and take the red's food, as well as other factors such as loss of native habitat…

Awards will be presented at a special Red Squirrel Survival Trust event this summer at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland on June 27, 2012.

Prince Charles speaking on behalf of the charity explains: "I am enormously encouraged that we are beginning to see evidence that with practical action existing populations of reds can be stabilised and can even grow and move into new areas.

"Our red squirrels are facing a battle for survival. It seems almost incomprehensible for me that we have allowed this situation to happen."

BRUCE WILLIS: Ski hard

Hollywood actor handing over his ski mountain to charity?
The actor Bruce Willis has offered a charity their 'own private Idaho' ski resort…

In a generous move the actor Bruce Willis is offering to donate a ski mountain to a local charity…

The action star says he wants to donate his Idaho ski resort, Soldier Mountain to a local charity with the non-profit taking on the running of the ski resort to support the local community.

The alpine ski area in central Idaho is based in the Sawtooth National Forest twelve miles north of Fairfield in Camas County. With a summit of 7177 ft above sea level and a vertical drop of 1425 ft the resort has been an attractive location for skiing for many years, and is popular with families.

The ski mountain area has two double chairlifts on its east facing slopes and a handle tow near the base... However, the new prospective NGO owner and its partners will have to wait until December to check out the slopes as the resort is currently closed until then.

The actor known for his action roles as John McClane in the Die Hard films, and other notable movie roles like Sixth Sense and Pulp Fiction bought the resort in the 1990s but has told county officials that he now wants to give the resort to a local non-profit.

A spokesman for the SE Group, a ski area planning firm working on a development plan for the mountain has revealed the developments…

The Soldier Mountain Recreation Association (SMRA) is likely to be the beneficiary of the actor's valuable donation. A number of ski resorts operate in the US as non-profits which are considered to be good for local economies, actively involving partnerships and stakeholding in the resorts.

The non-profit SMRA has issued a statement confirming it is the only organisation in negotiations and is also seeking advice, legal and monetary assistance to support the opportunity… The charity explains its mission statement is to provide and enhance economical, accessible, educational and outdoor recreation opportunities to the South Central Idaho communities.

It is thought the Soldier Mountain Recreation Association would also seek charity donations to maintain the resort once ownership is transferred…

A meeting was held in Fairfield, Idaho on Thursday, April 5 to discuss the plans… The non-profit says they were overwhelmed by support for the idea. Currently the SMRA is seeking involvement from individuals as well as groups, as well as sponsorship to support the proposals.

Willis, the actor who has a new Die Hard film out next year, is seeking to relinquish his assets in the area, including a home, bar and nightclub which are up for sale…

The Willis company Soldier Mountain Development currently owns and operates the ski resort on public land under permit from the US government… But now it seems the actor wants to donate the resort to a non-profit for the benefit of the local community…

FOOD WASTE: MP's Bill

Food redistribution charity welcomes plans to force stores to give unsold food to charity

FareShare, a charity fighting food waste has welcomed a legislation proposal that could force supermarkets to donate unsold food to good causes…

Bristol MP Kerry McCarthy says deteriorated food from supermarkets and restaurants should also be given to farmers for livestock feed…

The proposals are contained in the MP’s Food Waste Bill which has been heard in the UK Parliament with cross-party support.

Grace Rowley of the charity FareShare says the plans which could alleviate poverty and reduce the scandal of the current levels of food waste are a step in the right direction.

She explains the charity targets companies to help them change their culture of waste and also help them implement strategies so food can be redistributed to those who need it via FareShare's networks.

"The manufacturer that owns the stock - it is up to them to deal with that waste so we try to target them," says Grace.

She says of the bill one of the concerns that has been raised about it is that it is adding an extra tax almost, not a financial tax, but a resource tax on businesses, putting more legislation on them is never going to be popular… What would be better would be for more businesses in the food industry to wake up to their social responsibilities and affect change themselves.

However, the legislation may be necessary for some businesses to tackle their excess which still sees large amounts of good food being wasted, due to slight damage or just nudging over its sell by date.

While many businesses including Tesco are already working with FareShare much more progress in the industry is needed and so the enforcement plan is welcomed…

EARTH HOUR: Global switch-off

WWF reminder to get ready for Earth Hour…

Set your alarm clock for global lights out says the WWF…

The countdown is on as Earth Hour rapidly approaches, a global energy saving and awareness event in which hundreds of millions of people are expected to participate.

The Earth Hour event promoted by international wildlife and environmental conservation charity WWF involves a global switch off of electricity consumption. The fun international community event takes place 8.30pm local time on Saturday March 31 with all individuals and organisations invited to take part.

Earth Hour involves homes, schools, businesses and iconic landmarks across the globe turning off their lights for one hour and making a commitment to reducing carbon emissions...

The event now in its sixth year, having been launched in 2007, has become the world’s largest environmental movement with countries all over the world taking part in support of conservation, but there is still an opportunity for even more people to get involved in this year’s event.

Earth Hour began in Sydney when two million people switched off their lights. In 2011 1.8 billion people in 135 countries participated across all seven continents. Iconic landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, the Forbidden City, Buckingham Palace and Golden Gate Bridge have previously switched off in support of environmentally sustainable action.

As well as being a fun event there is a serious side too… When we turn on a light switch or an electronic device we rarely think about the effects of that energy use…

The fact is though that electricity use is powered substantially by fossil fuels and so is one of the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions, which is linked with climate change and its myriad attendant problems.

As such reducing household and business consumption of electricity is a major and very significant way that anyone concerned about protecting the environment can make a positive difference. Of course it also saves you money on your energy bills…

Like starting many good habits, that’s sometimes all you need to do - is just make a start…
That’s why the WWF’s Earth Hour big lights switch off initiative is such a good one and proving so popular, introducing more people every year to the satisfaction that comes with sharing in a communal international event involving energy saving.

The Earth Hour movement reflects a growing appetite for reducing waste and energy use that is proving more popular as more is known about the benefits of energy conservation.

ZAMBIA: Support Zambia

After their African Nations Cup victory why not start supporting Zambia?

The African Nations Cup final has drawn the attention of the world on to this small country in Southern Africa...

Why not continue your support for Zambia by supporting this beleaguered country off the pitch... and helping some of the organisations at work there?

Zambia's first football trophy on Sunday beating favourites Ivory Coast is ever the more remarkable when you consider its history.

A terrible plane disaster led to the loss of 18 players in 1993 when the team's plane crashed into the sea.

However, since then the team has been rebuilt and now this desperately poor nation’s football team has gone on to achieve major tournament success in the African Cup of Nations... Following their nations cup penalties victory on Sunday Zambia coach Herve Renard has since dedicated the outcome to the victims of the plane disaster.

For football fans in England and many across the world it will recall the achievement of Manchester United who went on to achieve European Cup success in 1968 following the Munich air disaster in 1958.

In any case, it is an amazing sporting achievement. But as news sinks in of Zambia's greatest sporting achievement it begs the question why not continue your support for Zambia by helping this poor and trouble-torn country?

According to health and humanitarian agencies the landlocked country of Zambia suffers from high levels of deprivation with the majority of the population struggling to rise above the poverty line... The country is also suffering from an HIV/AIDS epidemic with estimates at around 920,000 Zambians living with HIV and AIDS, almost one in 12 of the population. The country also has a high percentage of orphans related to the HIV/AIDS situation, estimated at about 600,000 children and rising...

As such Zambia desperately needs more support and we are not talking about the football terraces. In terms of sustainable development, especially investment in education and health resources, as well as vital food and water supplies.

Some of the charities working in Zambia include Oxfam whose priority is to reduce HIV/AIDS and help sufferers, as well as providing other development aid including essential services such as food, water and sanitation.

Other charities working in Zambia include Beautiful Gate, a charity that provides care and support to children in need and their families via school and community outreach programmes and foster care programmes... The Butterfly Tree charity is another small charity providing orphan sponsorship programmes and vital health services... International charity SOS Children's Villages is also based in Zambia supporting Aids orphans as well as providing its traditional children's villages which create family-centred care communities...

The combination of issues highlighted by charities operating in Zambia suggests this is a country that deserves some breaks and not just in football penalty shootout terms... Whilst enjoying the razzmatazz of a wonderful sporting occasion and an inspirational victory, let's hope the attention given to Zambia this week on the world stage translates to a continuing underlining of these important humanitarian matters at stake.

WILD WEST: Rodeo for Rwanda

Charity puts on Wild West show in London to raise funds for Rwanda

Grab your partner by the hand...

A small charity is running a rooting tooting rodeo event...

The evening of fun will raise funds for a sustainable educational project in Rwanda.

MAD4Africa which is run by volunteers invites supporters and Wild West fans out there to have a good time by dressing up with Stetson and boots, and perhaps trying out some line dancing, or even for the bravest budding Buffalo Bill or Cattle Kate, riding on the mechanical bull…

The charity event takes place on the evening of Saturday February 11, 8pm until late at The George Shillibeer, N7 - with proceeds going to MAD4Africa's educational training centre in Rwanda.

The rodeo hoedown promises plenty of laughs and games, including a prize for the longest rodeo rider on the bull and all in a good cause. The event will support the Kiyonza Professional Training Centre in the Ngoma Sector of Rwanda, a training facility which helps young people build sustainable futures for themselves and their communities.

The Kiyonza Professional Training Centre is in a very poor region of Rwanda and trains young people who are not enrolled within the education system, are unemployed or without any recognisable skills.

This training for young men and women includes life training like language skills and traditional trades like tailoring, carpentry and construction.

The centre is based in Kiyonza, a small village, close to the Burundian border which holds about 20,000 inhabitants but has meagre facilities, including no access to running water.

MAD4Africa says attendance at the centre is free and although the centre is equipped and up and running it needs ongoing support, and the charity also hopes to maintain and extend its services.

MAD4Africa was formed in March 2008 and is a UK and Rwandan registered charity. The charity runs regular fundraising events and hopes to ensure the long-term sustainability of its training centre and also develop future development projects…
