FOOD WASTE: MP's Bill

Food redistribution charity welcomes plans to force stores to give unsold food to charity

FareShare, a charity fighting food waste has welcomed a legislation proposal that could force supermarkets to donate unsold food to good causes…

Bristol MP Kerry McCarthy says deteriorated food from supermarkets and restaurants should also be given to farmers for livestock feed…

The proposals are contained in the MP’s Food Waste Bill which has been heard in the UK Parliament with cross-party support.

Grace Rowley of the charity FareShare says the plans which could alleviate poverty and reduce the scandal of the current levels of food waste are a step in the right direction.

She explains the charity targets companies to help them change their culture of waste and also help them implement strategies so food can be redistributed to those who need it via FareShare's networks.

She says of the bill one of the concerns that has been raised about it is that it is adding an extra tax almost, not a financial tax, but a resource tax on businesses, putting more legislation on them is never going to be popular… What would be better would be for more businesses in the food industry to wake up to their social responsibilities and affect change themselves.

However, the legislation may be necessary for some businesses to tackle their excess which still sees large amounts of good food being wasted, due to slight damage or just nudging over its sell by date.

While many businesses including Tesco are already working with FareShare much more progress in the industry is needed and so the enforcement plan is welcomed…
