BRUCE WILLIS: Ski hard

Hollywood actor handing over his ski mountain to charity?
The actor Bruce Willis has offered a charity their 'own private Idaho' ski resort…

In a generous move the actor Bruce Willis is offering to donate a ski mountain to a local charity…

The action star says he wants to donate his Idaho ski resort, Soldier Mountain to a local charity with the non-profit taking on the running of the ski resort to support the local community.

The alpine ski area in central Idaho is based in the Sawtooth National Forest twelve miles north of Fairfield in Camas County. With a summit of 7177 ft above sea level and a vertical drop of 1425 ft the resort has been an attractive location for skiing for many years, and is popular with families.

The ski mountain area has two double chairlifts on its east facing slopes and a handle tow near the base... However, the new prospective NGO owner and its partners will have to wait until December to check out the slopes as the resort is currently closed until then.

The actor known for his action roles as John McClane in the Die Hard films, and other notable movie roles like Sixth Sense and Pulp Fiction bought the resort in the 1990s but has told county officials that he now wants to give the resort to a local non-profit.

A spokesman for the SE Group, a ski area planning firm working on a development plan for the mountain has revealed the developments…

The Soldier Mountain Recreation Association (SMRA) is likely to be the beneficiary of the actor's valuable donation. A number of ski resorts operate in the US as non-profits which are considered to be good for local economies, actively involving partnerships and stakeholding in the resorts.

The non-profit SMRA has issued a statement confirming it is the only organisation in negotiations and is also seeking advice, legal and monetary assistance to support the opportunity… The charity explains its mission statement is to provide and enhance economical, accessible, educational and outdoor recreation opportunities to the South Central Idaho communities.

It is thought the Soldier Mountain Recreation Association would also seek charity donations to maintain the resort once ownership is transferred…

A meeting was held in Fairfield, Idaho on Thursday, April 5 to discuss the plans… The non-profit says they were overwhelmed by support for the idea. Currently the SMRA is seeking involvement from individuals as well as groups, as well as sponsorship to support the proposals.

Willis, the actor who has a new Die Hard film out next year, is seeking to relinquish his assets in the area, including a home, bar and nightclub which are up for sale…

The Willis company Soldier Mountain Development currently owns and operates the ski resort on public land under permit from the US government… But now it seems the actor wants to donate the resort to a non-profit for the benefit of the local community…
