Today's News - ECUADOR: Keeping 'ikat' alive

Age-old tie-dye technique fights against the trend

Outside Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city, the national flag flutters on a modest two-story adobe house alongside a large sign that reads "Ikat: weaving demonstrations and sales." Hanks of yarn and colourful fabrics hang around the courtyard and balcony, and weaving looms can be seen inside.
