HUNGER APPEAL: Ralph Fiennes

Celebrities support UNICEF's urgent appeal for West Africa hunger crisis...

UNICEF UK Ambassador Ralph Fiennes is one of many UNICEF celebrity supporters calling for an urgent response to the food crisis in West Africa that UNICEF has described as a growing scandal.

The actor has recalled his visit to Chad where he saw a malnourished infant that was in a life threatening situation...

Writing in his blog, he says: "I am alarmed to hear from UNICEF that in the next few months, a million children could die in eight countries across West Africa, including Chad, without immediate treatment and care..."

Bemoaning the lack of media attention for the food crisis that currently threatens so many vulnerable children, and with all the necessary remedies still underfunded the actor is urging the global community to wake up to the impending crisis.

And for anyone who can help, to support UNICEF's global appeal to raise funds for the children whose lives are at risk...

The charity also launched its #SahelNOW social media campaign ... which is receiving endorsements from millions already including celebrities such as Eddie Izzard, Bjork, Mia Farrow and Danny Glover.

PRINCE CHARLES: Red squirrel awards

Prince Charles endorses Red Squirrel Volunteer of the Year Awards 2012

The charity Red Squirrel Survival Trust has announced the winners of its volunteer awards for 2012…

The awards will be presented by the Duke of Northumberland in June at Alnwick Castle, and have been endorsed by Prince Charles.

Launched last year, the awards are designed to honour hard working volunteers in the world of red squirrel conservation…

The awards celebrate the work of volunteers working around the UK to preserve native red squirrels, and this year includes conservationist and red squirrel expert, David Stapleford from Norfolk.

Mr Stapleford receives a Lifetime Achievement award from the national conservation charity.

Mr Stapleford runs a breeding and conservation programme for the red squirrel, an at risk species in the UK... He also co-founded the East Anglian Red Squirrel Breeding Programme and is an adviser to the Countryside Restoration Trust (CRT) amongst other societies...

Other volunteer awards are going to: Elizabeth Bamford, Berwick upon Tweed; Helen Butler, Isle of Wight; Jackie Foott, Cumbria; Sally Hardy, Northumberland; Jerry, Sarah and Hagen Moss, Cumbria; Julie Bailey, Cumbria; Gillian Hill, Lancashire and James Sim from Argyll.

Elizabeth Bamford from Berwick upon Tweed has been recognised in the role of Unsung Hero, working as she does as a lead volunteer for the Berwick upon Tweed Save Our Squirrels group, covering the lower Tweed Valley along the Northumberland and Scots border.

The work involves getting landowners, gamekeepers and volunteers working together to support the squirrels that are under serious threat of extinction. Red squirrels are largely under threat due to competition from the more dominant greys, who carry the squirrelpox virus and take the red's food, as well as other factors such as loss of native habitat…

Awards will be presented at a special Red Squirrel Survival Trust event this summer at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland on June 27, 2012.

Prince Charles speaking on behalf of the charity explains: "I am enormously encouraged that we are beginning to see evidence that with practical action existing populations of reds can be stabilised and can even grow and move into new areas.

"Our red squirrels are facing a battle for survival. It seems almost incomprehensible for me that we have allowed this situation to happen."

BRUCE WILLIS: Ski hard

Hollywood actor handing over his ski mountain to charity?
The actor Bruce Willis has offered a charity their 'own private Idaho' ski resort…

In a generous move the actor Bruce Willis is offering to donate a ski mountain to a local charity…

The action star says he wants to donate his Idaho ski resort, Soldier Mountain to a local charity with the non-profit taking on the running of the ski resort to support the local community.

The alpine ski area in central Idaho is based in the Sawtooth National Forest twelve miles north of Fairfield in Camas County. With a summit of 7177 ft above sea level and a vertical drop of 1425 ft the resort has been an attractive location for skiing for many years, and is popular with families.

The ski mountain area has two double chairlifts on its east facing slopes and a handle tow near the base... However, the new prospective NGO owner and its partners will have to wait until December to check out the slopes as the resort is currently closed until then.

The actor known for his action roles as John McClane in the Die Hard films, and other notable movie roles like Sixth Sense and Pulp Fiction bought the resort in the 1990s but has told county officials that he now wants to give the resort to a local non-profit.

A spokesman for the SE Group, a ski area planning firm working on a development plan for the mountain has revealed the developments…

The Soldier Mountain Recreation Association (SMRA) is likely to be the beneficiary of the actor's valuable donation. A number of ski resorts operate in the US as non-profits which are considered to be good for local economies, actively involving partnerships and stakeholding in the resorts.

The non-profit SMRA has issued a statement confirming it is the only organisation in negotiations and is also seeking advice, legal and monetary assistance to support the opportunity… The charity explains its mission statement is to provide and enhance economical, accessible, educational and outdoor recreation opportunities to the South Central Idaho communities.

It is thought the Soldier Mountain Recreation Association would also seek charity donations to maintain the resort once ownership is transferred…

A meeting was held in Fairfield, Idaho on Thursday, April 5 to discuss the plans… The non-profit says they were overwhelmed by support for the idea. Currently the SMRA is seeking involvement from individuals as well as groups, as well as sponsorship to support the proposals.

Willis, the actor who has a new Die Hard film out next year, is seeking to relinquish his assets in the area, including a home, bar and nightclub which are up for sale…

The Willis company Soldier Mountain Development currently owns and operates the ski resort on public land under permit from the US government… But now it seems the actor wants to donate the resort to a non-profit for the benefit of the local community…
